5-Day Classic Wildlife Safari to Mikumi & Nyerere National Parks

Overview

This classic wildlife safari takes you deep into two of Tanzania’s most authentic and least crowded parks – Mikumi National Park and Nyerere National Park (formerly part of Selous Game Reserve). Over four days, you’ll experience game drives across open savannahs, a boat safari along the Rufiji River, and a walking safari with local guides. The journey offers remarkable wildlife encounters, scenic landscapes, and a true taste of Tanzania’s untouched wilderness.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam

Upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport, your guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel in Dar es Salaam. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city. Overnight in Dar es Salaam.

Day 2: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Early morning pickup at 5:00 AM from your hotel and drive to Mikumi National Park. You’ll stop in Morogoro for a hot lunch before entering the park for an afternoon and evening game drive. Mikumi is well-known for its open grasslands and diverse wildlife including impalas, elephants, Masai giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, and predators such as lions. Dinner and overnight stay inside the park.

Day 3: Mikumi to Nyerere National Park – Rufiji River Boat Safari

After breakfast, depart for Nyerere National Park. The drive takes approximately 7–8 hours through scenic and largely untouched landscapes. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the way. Upon arrival, head out for a sunset boat safari along the Rufiji River, where you’ll spot hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and more. Dinner and overnight at a lodge .

Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Nyerere National Park

After an early breakfast, set out on a full-day game drive with packed lunch. Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected areas and home to a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, hyenas, buffaloes, and many species of antelope and birds. The diverse landscape features wetlands, woodlands, and open plains, offering exceptional photographic opportunities. Return for dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 5: Walking Safari – Return to Dar es Salaam

Start your day with a guided morning walking safari in the Selous forest area, led by a ranger. This is a chance to track animals on foot, meet local communities, and experience the wilderness from a unique perspective. After returning for breakfast, prepare for the drive back to Dar es Salaam. You will be dropped off at your hotel, airport, or ferry terminal, depending on your onward travel plans.
